Closure of educational institutions in smog-hit Lahore ordered

LAHORE: Lahore High Court (LHC) ordered closure of all educational institutions in provincial capital for two days due to environmental pollution caused by smog. Court ordered administration to issue notification for two-day closure of educational institutions.

Court also ordered demolition of brick-kilns contaminating atmosphere and confiscation and auction of vehicles polluting environment. While expressing its concerns over situation of smog in city, court ordered environment department to amend rules for demolition of brick-kilns. “Brick-kilns that are polluting environment should be issued notice first and then they should be demolished,” court ordered. It also ordered to file criminal cases against brick-kilns causing pollution in environment. Lahore has been listed as most polluted city of world again. Due to smog in city, Air Quality Index of city has been recorded at 394.

Indian capital New Delhi is second in list with AQI at 295 while Pakistan’s financial hub Karachi ranks third with AQI at 291.
