ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Railways has announced a 50% discount on ticket prices for disabled passengers traveling on all express and passenger trains, excluding the Green Line. To avail of the discount, passengers must present a Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC) that includes the disability logo.
The discount also applies to attendants accompanying visually impaired passengers. In addition, Pakistan Railways has made several provisions to enhance accessibility for disabled individuals. At major stations, wheelchairs are available, and special booking counters have been set up to assist disabled passengers. Select stations now offer free access to executive washrooms and restrooms, with plans to extend this service to 12 stations in the near future. A spokesperson from the Ministry of Railways stated that these initiatives are part of ongoing efforts to improve the comfort and convenience of railway services for people with disabilities. Regarding train operations, the official noted that the Khushal Khan Khattak Express was discontinued in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Presently, Pakistan Railways operates 98 trains daily with 1,180 serviceable coaches, though 72% of passenger coaches have surpassed their intended lifespan, necessitating further resources for maintenance.
The return of the Khushal Khan Khattak Express will be reviewed once sufficient coaches are available and a commercial feasibility study is conducted.
