District South: Two women, an infant die as roof collapsed

KARACHI: Three persons including two women and an infant of a month died when roof collapse on them in Usmanabad South District. According to details, roof of ground floor non-concrete house was collapsed resulting death of three while a man got injured in incident. Incident was took place in katchi abadi of Usmanabad. Soon after incident, area police, district administration, rescue and SBCA teams rushed to spot.

Woman identified as Zubaida Bibi (35), Afshan (230 and an infant Rubab lost lives while Abdul Qadeer (25) sustained injuries. Bodies and injured were shifted to Civil (Ruth Pfau) Hospital.

SBCA officials said that roof of a two-room non-concrete house was collapsed as construction at rooftop was being carried out. “Roof of house could not bear construction work load and collapsed,” SBCA team observed. It is slum area and most of houses are of non-concrete structure.

Area is badly facing sewerage leakage issues and seeping into plinths of houses. “These factors are reasons behind roof collapse,” SBCA team added. SSP City Police Shabbir Ahmed said incident was taken place due to dilapidated condition of house, adding relief operation was continued to remove debris.

Ahmed said two walls of house were in dilapidated condition and earlier police contacted to Sindh Building Control Authority for removing dangerous structures. South Deputy Commissioner Saeed Ahmed Leghari said that Usmanabad katchi abadi is in control of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation. He said that SBCA has declared house ‘dangerous’ and steps were being taken to evacuate surrounding buildings as well. Building construction bylaws were not followed in vicinity adding it is responsibility of SBCA to ensure building construction in accordance with by laws.

Meanwhile, Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori ordered for best treatment of injured person.
