PM Shehbaz to chair six-member Cabinet committee on energy

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif constituted six-member Cabinet Committee on Energy (CCoE) in order to ensure smooth implementation of energy projects “Currently underway or in pipeline”.

According to notification issued by Cabinet Division, six-member committee will be chaired by Shehbaz Sharif himself. Cabinet committee on energy also comprises of Finance, Power, Planning, Petroleum and Economic Affairs ministers.

Committee will ensure smooth implementation of energy projects currently underway or in pipeline, in particular projects falling under umbrella of China-Pakistan Economic Corridor. It will also identify and remove bottlenecks in expeditious implementation of relevant projects.

It has been ordered to review current energy policy and remove its weaknesses. Committee will also identify flaws and deficiencies of existing legal and institutional framework governing energy sector and formulate reform initiatives.

Energy committee will also conduct inter-ministerial coordination whenever required, but at least once every fortnight. It will ensure adequate stocks of petroleum products in country through policy/administrative measures.

It will develop efficient energy markets through deregulation within limits allowed by regulators and reduce theft losses in energy sector and to pass on benefits to consumer.

Meanwhile, Shehbaz Sharif sought comprehensive strategy for increase in information technology exports of country on priority basis. Chairing meeting on progress of information technology sector attended by prominent information technology experts, PM said information technology had prominent role in economy.

Capacity of information technology sector to boost country’s economy would be utilised, he added. Youth would be provided facilities of international level to equip them with knowledge and skills of present age in sector of information technology, he added.
