ISLAMABAD: In move aimed at commemorating Pakistan Day and Eidul Fitr, President Asif Ali Zardari has approved remission for prisoners, offering gesture of goodwill and compassion. Announcement came, signaling measure of clemency for eligible inmates.

Under presidential decree, prisoners across nation will benefit from remission of 90 days each on occasions of Pakistan Day, annually observed on March 23rd and Eidul Fitr, significant religious festival celebrated by Muslims worldwide.

President Zardari exercised his constitutional authority, invoking Article 45 and Rule 15-A, to grant this reprieve to deserving prisoners. However, it’s worth noting that not all prisoners will be eligible for this remission.

Remission will not apply to prisoners convicted of severe offenses such as murder, espionage, or anti-state activities. Additionally, those involved in crimes including rape, theft, robbery, kidnapping, terrorism and financial crimes will also be ineligible for remission.

Furthermore, reduction in sentences will specifically target certain demographics within prison population. Male prisoners over age of 65 and female prisoners over age of 60, who have completed at least one-third of their sentence, will be eligible for remission.

Additionally, juvenile offenders who have served one-third of their sentence will also be entitled to this reprieve.
