GARHI KHUDA BAKHSH: President Asif Ali Zardari assailed bureaucracy in Islamabad, saying Pakistan was not poor country but it had been made so by mindset of 'babus' [officers] sitting in capital.
Addressing gathering on 45th death anniversary of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, Zardari recounted how former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto had appointed him as chairman of the Pakistan Peoples' Party, despite doubts from some friends about his leadership capabilities.
He emphasised that Pakistan's status as poor nation was not predetermined, adding that despite Allah's provision of abundant wealth, nation suffered from lack of intellect. Zardari stressed importance of cultivating mindset that seeks to understand and address country's challenges comprehensively.
Reflecting on his presidency, Zardari attributed his success to unwavering support of workers of Pakistan Peoples' Party. With party's four-decade-long struggle, he expressed determination to lead country towards prosperity and development.
He highlighted his methodical approach to governance, ensuring that every decision is made with careful consideration to prevent harm to nation. He reiterated interconnectedness of people and nation, stating that loss suffered by individuals ultimately impacts country as whole.
Zardari acknowledged enduring consequences of actions of historical figures who have inflicted damage on nation, which continues to be felt in present day.
