ISLAMABAD: Supreme Court (SC) has nullified fine of Rs one million imposed by PEMRA on 29 TV channels each for broadcasting wrong news of bomb blast in Lahore. Court issued these orders during hearing of appeal pleas of 29 channels. Court has ordered PEMRA to review matter afresh besides directing proceedings in respect of show cause notices issued to TV channels be completed within 3 months.

Justice Mansoor Ali Shah remarked apparently PEMRA committee has no powers to initiate proceedings. 3-member bench of SC presided over by Justice Mansoor Ali Shah took up case for hearing. Lawyers told court fine was imposed on several TV channels due to wrong news in 2017. It was not reviewed clearly. Court has directed PEMRA to review show cause notices issued to TV channels afresh. Court nullified fine as well.
