KARACHI: Senior Minister of Sindh, Sharjeel Inam Memon, has announced the Sindh government's intent to acquire modern weapons to combat criminal elements involved in raw material theft.

Speaking to the media in Karachi, Memon emphasized the urgency of equipping the police with advanced weaponry to enhance their capabilities in maintaining law and order. Memon highlighted the ongoing anti-dacoit operations in Katcha, where police and Rangers are collaborating closely.

He noted the necessity of modernizing law enforcement efforts, as criminal groups possess sophisticated arms. The Sindh government has already reached out to the federal government, formally requesting modern weaponry to bolster security measures.

In his address, Memon underscored President Asif Zardari's recent focus on tackling various law and order challenges, with a primary emphasis on combating drug-related issues. Stressing the gravity of the situation, Memon expressed concerns over drug trafficking infiltrating multiple sectors of society, particularly educational institutions, where innocent children are being targeted.

The Senior Minister revealed that the Excise Department, in coordination with the police, has initiated anti-drug operations. These efforts, supported by Sindh's Chief Minister, Home Minister, and Inspector General of Police, have resulted in numerous arrests of drug dealers.

Memon emphasized the dangerous prevalence of crystal meth and ice in society, likening their users to community "suicide bombers" due to their unpredictable behavior. In addition to urban areas, Memon emphasized the importance of joint checkpoints for drug interdiction.

He urged parents to remain vigilant of changes in their children's behavior and announced plans for random drug testing in schools, with a commitment to privacy and support for affected families.

Memon detailed a recent arrest in Clifton, Karachi, of a drug dealer supplying substances to schools and affluent areas.

While evidence from the dealer's devices has led to the identification of prominent individuals, Memon stressed the primary objective of drug prevention over sensationalism. Looking ahead, Memon outlined plans to bolster the Narcotics Control Wing of the Excise Department, with full support from the Sindh Chief Minister.

He reiterated the government's unwavering commitment to the anti-drug campaign and emphasized the need for collective societal effort, urging media support in raising awareness.

Memon announced the Sindh government's intention to establish rehabilitation centers for drug addicts, underlining a holistic approach to addressing substance abuse issues.
