Islamabad: Caretaker Power Minister Muhammad Ali vowed to provide maximum relief to people on inflated electricity bills today.

Speaking to private TV channel, Ali asserted, “Consultations have been made to lessen burden on power consumers. Recommendations to provide relief to masses will be present in Cabinet today.”

Minister made it clear that decision in line with power bills will be taken in accordance with International Monetary Fund programme.

It is also expected to get approval for discontinuing facility of providing free electricity units to officers of power distribution companies (Discos). In connection with capacity payments, minister made it clear that recommendations will be made within two weeks. Separately, Jamaat-e-Islami amir Sirajul Haq equated inflated power bills with “Drone attacks”. Addressing press conference, Haq assailed caretaker government, saying, “People have been compelled to commit suicide due to inflated power bills. About 48 percent of taxes have been imposed along with original power price.” He asked government to end additional taxes on electricity bills.

Sirajul Haq said that his party will stage protest against exorbitant power bills on September 1 in Rawalpindi. He announced nationwide strike and shutter down on September 2. “Power bills have increased three times within one month. People have been compelled to commit suicide due to ballooning inflation. Electricity bill of at least Rs 50,000 has been sent to every house,” rued Sirajul Haq.
