President stresses special measures for welfare of elderly, poor

ISLAMABAD: President Dr Arif Alvi stressed government institutions, non-governmental organisations and civil society to work together for welfare of poor people and elderly in society.

Talking to delegation of Old Age Home, Aafiyat Multan here at Aiwan-e-Sadr, President said Islam gave utmost importance to respect senior citizens. He said that parents should arrange quality education and training for their children according to teachings of Islam.

He said fulfilling basic rights of parents must be among top responsibilities of their children. "Actions are needed to provide all basic facilities and necessities of life to homeless and elderly", President Alvi said.

He urged philanthropists, welfare organisations and other sections of society to make special efforts to take care of elderly. He said measures were also needed at legal and social level for the well-being of senior citizens.

He appreciated role of 'Tare Zemin Par Trust' and 'Affiyat' for taking care of elderly. Later, President also hosted lunch for senior citizens.
