Islamabad: President Dr Arif Alvi approved elevation of three high court judges to Supreme Court (SC). Under Article 175A of Constitution, he approved outgoing Islamabad High Court (IHC) Chief Justice Athar Minallah, Sindh High Court Justice Syed Hasan Azhar Rizvi and Lahore High Court Justice Shahid Waheed to apex court, a statement issued by President’s Secretariat said. President Alvi also approved Justice Aamer Farooq’s appointment as IHC Chief Justice.

Parliamentary Committee on Appointment of Judges had approved elevation of Justice Waheed and Justice Rizvi to Supreme Court. Eight-member panel, headed by Senator Farooq H. Naek examined Judicial Commission of Pakistan’s (JCP) recommendations for elevating two judges.

Committee on November 4 approved  JCP’s recommendations for promotion of Justice Minallah to SC and Justice Farooq as IHC Chief Justice, respectively. However, it had deferred consideration of names of Justice Waheed and Justice Rizvi for its meeting slated for November 10.
