ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf has urged electoral watchdog to drop process and conduct polls with 90 days. Both parties made their position clear when ECP officials met them as part of its consultations with major political parties on election roadmap. Meanwhile, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl backed Election Commission of Pakistan to hold general elections after delimitation.
Electoral watchdog in statement said that PTI representatives emphasised that elections should be held within 90 days and contested that there was “No need for delimitation at this time”.
Imran Khan-led party also called for immediate release of its arrested leaders and workers and urged ECP to give permission to hold political rallies and an equal political environment to all parties.
On other hand, JUI-F representatives clarified that holding elections is constitutional requirement and informed electoral authority that as census results have come delimitation should be done first. EC told both parties that it would hold upcoming polls as soon as possible and all parties would get level playing field. Statement added that process of consultation with major political parties will continue in coming days.
According to Article 51 (5) of Constitution, seats of National Assembly to each province and federal capital shall be allocated on basis of population in accordance with last preceding census officially published.
