President calls for accelerating infrastructure development in Gilgit-Baltistan

Islamabad: President Asif Ali Zardari called for accelerating infrastructure development in Gilgit-Baltistan and focusing on strengthening education and health sectors to bring it at par with other developed areas of country.

Talking to Governor Gilgit-Baltistan Syed Mehdi Shah and Chief Minister Gul Bar Khan who called on him here President underlined need to initiate programs for training and skill development of Gilgit-Baltistan’s youth to equip them with employable skills as per market demand.

During meeting, two informed President about development projects being undertaken by government of Gilgit-Baltistan. They apprised President about various issues being faced by people of GB, particularly lack of education and health facilities, and unemployment. They requested President to visit Gilgit-Baltistan and address legislative assembly.

Highlighting potential of area, President said Gilgit-Baltistan has enormous hydroelectric potential that needs to be capitalized upon for its development. He said Gilgit-Baltistan is blessed with abundant natural resources, including mining, gems and minerals, which should be fully explored and developed to bring economic prosperity to area.

He said steps should also be taken to promote local businesses and economic activities to make Gilgit-Baltistan self-sufficient, besides promoting inclusive and sustainable development in area.
