ISLAMABAD: Government refused to provide additional funds to Election Commission of Pakistan for holding by-elections in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa citing country's economic situation.

According to details, Ministry of Finance has apprised electoral watchdog of its decision, saying that latter should withdraw demand for additional funds in interest of country.

In statement, Finance Ministry said country was facing severe economic crisis, adding that funds were also required for flood recovery and rehabilitation.

"Country has to complete terms and conditions of International Monetary Fund," It said, Additional funds will only be provided if situation improves.Election Commission of Pakistan asked for additional funds of Rs 14 billion for Punjab and KP by-elections.
