Lahore: Lahore High Court (LHC) directed authorities to close markets and restaurants by 10:00pm in Lahore to control smog. Orders were issued by Justice Shahid Karim while hearing a petition seeking court’s intervention to curb smog.

While issuing directives, court said that restaurants be allowed to close at 11pm on weekends. Court also ordered that schools opening on Fridays be sealed and directed education department to strictly implement its orders.

During hearing, court was suggested to close markets on Sunday. However, it put off suggestion for now. Hearing has been adjourned till December 19.

Last week, Punjab government on LHC’s order, issued notification directing closure of schools and offices in Lahore for additional two days Friday and Saturday weekly due to worsening smog situation in city. Meanwhile, School Education Department’s notification stated that decision to close schools weekly is applied to all private and government schools of District Lahore.

It also noted that chief executive officer of District Education Authority Lahore and concerned heads shall manage distribution of homework to students during closure of schools.
