Asif Zardari urges special attention for gems, jewellery sector

ISLAMABAD: United Kingdom (UK) High Commissioner to Pakistan Jane Marriott and President Asif Ali Zardari emphasised further strengthening trade and economic ties between Pakistan and United Kingdom for mutual benefit.
Talking to Jane Marriott, who called on him hhere he said Pakistan and United Kingdom enjoy cordial relations reinforced by high-level interactions and people-to-people contacts over years. He said stabilization of economy with key focus on employment generation and poverty alleviation is one of top priorities of government.
Highlighting climate change as serious challenge to Pakistan, Asif Zardari informed High Commissioner that Sindh province has mangrove forests over 600,000 hectares, which support coastal ecosystem and contribute to environmental sustainability.
Asif Zardari expressed his warm sentiments for His Majesty King Charles III and the Princess of Wales, Catherine Middleton, and wished them good health.
Meanwhile, Asif Zardari said that gem and jewellery may bring in significant foreign exchange for Pakistan, urging special attention for industry.
Chairing meeting regarding development of gems and jewellery sector, he emphasised necessity of improved marketing and projection of gemstone items from Pakistan.
Chief Executive Officer of Pakistan Gems and Jewellery Development Company Muhammad Alamgir Chaudhry and senior government officials attended meeting, press release by President House said.
President Zardari said that Pakistan’s gems and jewellery sector has huge potential which needs to be fully utilised for country’s development.
He urged need to focus on training and skill enhancement of local workforce, besides promoting diversification and industrialisation of sector to increase its contribution to country’s economy. CEO of PGJDC apprised meeting about strategic plan for development of sector.
