ISLAMABAD: A high-level meeting of the Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif Committee on the import of raw sugar was held under the chairmanship of Federal Minister for National Food Security & Research, Rana Tanveer Hussain.

The meeting, attended by Minister of Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik, Minister of Industries Haroon Akhtar, and other senior officials, focused on key matters related to the import of raw sugar to stabilize domestic sugar prices.

Federal Minister Rana Tanveer Hussain emphasized that importing raw sugar could help maintain stability in the price of domestically refined white sugar. He stated that ensuring a steady supply of raw sugar would prevent artificial shortages and price hikes, ultimately benefiting consumers. The committee conducted a comprehensive discussion on the feasibility, benefits, and potential concerns regarding raw sugar imports. Various international models were reviewed to assess their impact on price stability and public welfare. The participants examined how countries with similar economic structures have successfully managed sugar imports to prevent price volatility and ensure affordability for consumers.

During the deliberations, Minister of Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik highlighted the role of energy costs in the sugar refining process and how fluctuations in fuel prices could impact overall sugar production expenses. Minister of Industries Haroon Akhtar underscored the need for a balanced approach that supports both consumers and local growers. He stressed that any import strategy should not adversely affect domestic sugarcane farmers and the local sugar industry. Federal Minister Rana Tanveer Hussain instructed the concerned authorities to conduct an in-depth study to determine the modalities and implications of raw sugar imports on local growers and the economy. He emphasized the importance of maintaining a fair balance between import policies and protecting the interests of domestic farmers. The study will assess the potential impact of imports on local sugar mills, employment, and overall market dynamics.

The Government of Pakistan, under the leadership of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Federal Minister Rana Tanveer Hussain, remains committed to ensuring maximum relief for the public by implementing effective strategies in the food security sector. As part of its commitment to food security, the government is actively exploring ways to enhance domestic agricultural productivity while maintaining a stable supply of essential commodities.

The committee also discussed mechanisms to curb hoarding and speculative activities that contribute to sudden price surges in the sugar market. The meeting concluded with a directive to expedite the study on sugar imports and present detailed recommendations for a structured import policy. The findings of this study will be used to devise a sustainable strategy that ensures market stability without compromising the interests of local stakeholders.

The government's proactive approach to addressing sugar market concerns demonstrates its dedication to economic stability and public welfare. As Pakistan navigates the challenges of food security and price fluctuations, strategic interventions such as raw sugar imports could play a pivotal role in ensuring affordability and accessibility for consumers.
