Woman dies, several faint in stampede during BISP cash distribution

KARACHI: A woman died while several others sustained injuries and fainted in stampede during cash distribution under Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) in Keamari. According to rescue sources, eight women were shifted to Trauma Centre of Civil Hospital in state of unconsciousness.

“Cash was being distributed under BISP. Most of women fainted due to hot weather. No one has complained about stampede,” police claimed. “Situation is fine at moment,” they added.

Disbursement of stipends under Benazir Income Support Programme is being resumed which was suspended for two days due to intense heat. According to spokesperson of BISP, process of payment of stipends will continue till Wednesday. However, process will start again on 3rd of next month.

These stipends are provided to nine million families across country on a quarterly basis of nine thousand rupees per deserving family. On directives of Minister for Poverty Alleviation and Social Safety Shazia Marri, monitoring teams have been constituted to ensure transparent disbursement of stipends to marginalized sections of society. In order to redress complaints expeditiously, BISP has also issued toll free number 0800-26477 for general public.
