ISLAMABAD: In a bid to drive export-led economic growth, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed authorities to devise a comprehensive and effective strategy to achieve the target of $60 billion in exports over the next five years.
Chairing a high-level meeting to review measures for boosting Pakistan's exports, the prime minister emphasized the need for sustainable tariff reforms to support industrial growth, enhance economic expansion, and strengthen the country's export sector. He underscored the importance of prioritizing key sectors such as services, information technology, and agriculture to accelerate export-driven progress.
Sharif reiterated that export-led economic development is a crucial pillar of "Uraan Pakistan," the government's five-year national economic transformation plan (2024-29) based on the 5Es framework. The plan focuses on economic growth, exports, energy, environment, and equity.
To enhance the competitiveness of export industries, he directed the implementation of necessary reforms in the governance system of the Export Development Fund.
He stressed the need for a skill development program, particularly targeting the textile sector, including readymade garments and knitwear, to support workforce capacity building and increase exports.
During the meeting, officials briefed the prime minister on ongoing reforms within the Ministry of Commerce and the strategies being developed to meet the $60 billion export target over the next five years.
The briefing highlighted that gradual tariff reductions have been introduced over the past two years to create a more conducive environment for businesses. Furthermore, the Commerce Ministry organizes international exhibitions in Pakistan annually to showcase local industries and attract global buyers.
Officials also informed the prime minister that consultations with stakeholders regarding the Strategic Trade Policy Framework 2025-30 are in progress. Additionally, the country's e-commerce policy is in its final stages of consultation and is expected to be presented before the Cabinet for approval next month.
To further strengthen Pakistan's export capabilities, the government has established the National Compliance Center (NCC) to ensure that Pakistani products align with international standards. The NCC will develop training programs to enhance the technical skills and quality assurance of export industries, facilitating access to global markets.
Sharif reaffirmed the government's commitment to implementing structural reforms and fostering a business-friendly environment to drive sustainable economic growth. He stressed the need for coordinated efforts among ministries and stakeholders to achieve the ambitious export target and strengthen Pakistan's position in international trade.
