Tehran: A powerful Iranian cleric member of Assembly of Experts that selects country’s supreme leader has been killed in an armed attack, officials said. “Ayatollah Abbas Ali Soleimani was killed this morning in an armed attack, assailant was also arrested and is now being investigated,” IRNA news agency reported, citing political and security official for northern Mazandaran province where attack happened. Attack took place in bank in city of Babolsar, official said. “Motive of assailant is not yet clear and will be announced after it is clarified,” official added.

Governor of Mazandaran province Mahmoud Hosseinipour said attacker was local security personnel of bank.
